Introducing the Selous Game Reserve, Tanzania: one of the few remaining wild places

    Africa’s Best Kept Secret.

The Selous is one of the most expansive animal reserves in the world, the largest and oldest protected sanctuary in AFRICA, boasting some of the richest populations of the many endangered and iconic creatures on the continent! Found in Tanzania, only 4-hours from the International Airport of Dar es Salaam, it is four times more vast than the Endless Plains of Serengeti. An explorer’s paradise; it was named a UNESCO world heritage site in 1982, “the diversity of its wildlife and its undisturbed nature making it a treasure to be cherished for generations to come”.

Truly the Selous is a treasure, a vast untouched land and an authentic safari experience with low tourist traffic. Safari vehicles are allowed to track animals off-road through the park. One of the last remaining wild places, it was named for the famous British hunter and conservationist, Frederick Selous who fell in battle in the park which now bears his name, fighting for his country in the First World War. His gravestone is in the reserve. Come, explore; you can still find the African Wild Dog roaming the vast stretches and tremendous topography of this, the Selous Game Reserve.

More giraffe than one can count, parades of elephant, lion prides, the proud kudu, nile crocodiles, hippopotami and tropical birds nesting on her banks. An ancient source, the Rufiji River, passes through the Selous Game Reserve and empties into the Indian Ocean, opposite the Island of Zanzibar. Think of a land and surrounding tribes, lost, in a time-gone-by. Few places in East Africa are so pristine. Had Dr. David Livingstone, or Sir Morton Stanley ventured up-river (as was Stanley’s expressed travel plans to the sultan of Zanzibar), their eyes would have gazed on a wild beauty not dissimilar to the state of this unspoiled area today.

Situated on the edge of the Great Selous Game Reserve, located in the buffer zone between the African beasts and lost civilizations, Baker & Sons have built a worthy establishment off the banks of the mighty Rufiji River. Since 2013, our company have been hosting safari goers through this premier safari destination.

Note, that this is all original footage, captured on one camera (a canon 5d markiii), shot exclusively on one safari drive.

Fact: Selous Game Reserve is also known by its more recent name, Nyerere National Park. The experience remains unchanged.
