Tree Climbing Lions… naturally! It’s programed in them by their Maker. Poachers beware, you can’t climb high enough to escape them.
In the Selous Game Reserve, the largest and oldest animal sanctuary on the whole continent of AFRICA, there’s a pride of lions that have taken to the trees. Though all lions can climb, not all tend to relax on limbs and branches. But the Climbing Lions of the Selous Reserve have demonstrated an affinity for the heights and breeze the lower canopy affords.

It’s becoming more common, especially if you find this particular pride, as you safari through the Selous (aka Nyerere National Park) to come upon our lions in the gnarly flora of the old reserve. Look up! Or else you might miss the big cat right above you.

Our guides are trained to spot the tree climbing lions. At Baker & Sons, it’s a genuine safari experience. The Selous is an unknown commodity, a vast and free land in Africa. It’s not over-commercialized and the vehicles have no prescribed paths or roads in her boundaries. To find animals, you need to follow the lion paw tracks along the dirt path, or search out a spot of shade at one of her many interior lakes… or look up in the trees. It’s an authentic destination for those who don’t compromise on quality.

Welcome to the Selous, and to Baker & Sons. Just maybe, you too will enjoy an audience with the climbing lion pride inside of the famous reserve. Click to Book a Safari Getaway with us.

Baker & Sons thanks our lodge guests, Patrice & Cindy, who stayed with us for eight days in February of 2025. We took them on multiple safari excursions in the park and through our neighbouring villages to meet the local tribes. Cindy captured the video of the lion climbing the tree and they shared their footage with our company to post.
My wife and I had a fantastic 8 days at Baker Safari. It was an unforgettable stay. The Baker Safari team listened to our goals on this trip and was very dedicated to meeting each of our goals in a special and personal way. We obviously wanted to go on Safaris and our guide Muddi was attentive to our aspirations and knew where to take us to see the animals we wanted to see and also give us relevant information. We also wanted to be in contact with the locals and they were able to organize visits to different villages where we were able to experience rich and memorable encounters. Thank you to the whole team, to Graydon who accompanied us in setting up the program of our stay, to Moïse who was sensitive to each of our needs and all the other members of the team who expressed remarkable kindness and professionalism.
